AFFR History

The Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam (AFFR) was established in 2000, and the foundation organized its festival the same year as the first architecture film festival in the world. Festivals also took place again in 2001 and 2003. In 2007 AFFR made a fresh start after a few years of silence. In 2009 the event expanded significantly in terms of visitor numbers and programming.

Renzo Sgolacchia

Renzo Sgolacchia

Renzo Sgolacchia is an architect and filmmaker based in Rotterdam. His research focuses on the relationship between housing, labour and contemporary forms of urbanisation. He wrote and directed a documentary on the life of migrant workers in the Netherlands. He also founded Cinema Architecture, a project combining research and film screenings, and is a member of the international research group The Surroundings Lab. In 2020, his proposal, Learning from Films, was selected by the Future Architecture Programme. He has taught at institutions and universities such as KABK in The Hague, TU Delft, Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam, IUAV in Venice, Polis University in Tirana, The University of Sheffield and MAO Ljubljana. He is one of AFFR’s critical viewers.
