About the program

Living in a flat means being close together, but also far apart. In these four films you see how we are connected, but often also lonely. You follow the lady who operates the lift in a famous building in Tbilisi, hear the sounds experienced by a lonely elderly resident, witness the lives we live side by side, and learn how drastic solutions are sometimes sought for loneliness.

Between Sound and Silence

The coffee machine in the kitchen, the ticking clock in the living room, the lift in the hallway – these are the sounds in the life of an 85-year-old. A portrait of loneliness captured through sound.

The House

Each apartment contains a different life, as we see in this dilapidated apartment complex in Estonia. A dryly comic portrait of togetherness and loneliness, in which everyone is separated only by a thin wall.

Ruletista

The famous utopian housing complex Alterlaa in Vienna – usually portrayed as the built promise of a better life – from a perspective rarely seen, in this darkly humorous story about despair and hope.

Lift Lady

In this tragicomic tale of resilience and urban transformation, a former sniper turned elevator operator wages a quiet battle against bureaucracy when her lift in a monumental housing block in Tbilisi breaks down.
