AFFR History

The Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam (AFFR) was established in 2000, and the foundation organized its festival the same year as the first architecture film festival in the world. Festivals also took place again in 2001 and 2003. In 2007 AFFR made a fresh start after a few years of silence. In 2009 the event expanded significantly in terms of visitor numbers and programming.

A sneak preview of this year’s festival

Programme 2023 in the making

India will soon have the largest population of any nation in the world. This prompted us to take a closer look at the country. Curator Jord den Hollander travelled to Mumbai and Ahmedabad to meet with architects and filmmakers and discuss their contribution to AFFR. The programme is still in the making, but here’s a sneak preview of what to expect at this year’s festival.

In India, Jord spoke to architect, filmmaker and Mumbai expert Rohan Shivkumar. The plan is to compile with him the film programme ‘Mumbai Plays Itself’, consisting of clips from Bollywood films, which offer an inspiring and revealing portrait of the city that produces more films than any other in the world.
Jord also spoke to the granddaughter of Balkrishna Doshi, he passed away this year, about the new documentary that looks at his work. Khushnu Panthaki Hoof spent many years working as an architect with her grandfather and compiled the exhibition about him that is currently travelling around Europe. Jord also visited the architecture faculty at CEPT University in Ahmedabad, founded by Doshi, to meet architect and associate professor Sachin Soni.

The contours of the programme are gradually becoming visible, so keep an eye on our socials or sign up for our newsletter.
