AFFR History

The Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam (AFFR) was established in 2000, and the foundation organized its festival the same year as the first architecture film festival in the world. Festivals also took place again in 2001 and 2003. In 2007 AFFR made a fresh start after a few years of silence. In 2009 the event expanded significantly in terms of visitor numbers and programming.

In Memoriam
Rein Jansma
1959-2023

“The fear of knowing sits so deep in so many people because they think that their level of understanding is inversely proportional to the mystery in their life.”

“Space and time are inextricably linked. Building and reflecting together constitute the culture of space. AFFR affords me a chance to examine that relationship from another perspective.”

Rein Jansma, the architect and founder of ZJA, passed away on the night of 17 April. Rein was a fan and supporter of AFFR from the very start. His office’s annual film screenings always marked the start of our festival in a cheerful and energetic way.

We are immensely grateful to Rein for his unconditional support for our festival and his encouragement to push boundaries.

We will miss his infectious enthusiasm terribly.
