Herman van Dongen
new festival director AFFR

'Sometimes the things you like best come together at unexpected moments: Film, Architecture and the City.’

Herman van Dongen<br>new festival director AFFR

AFFR has appointed Herman van Dongen as its new festival director for 2024. Van Dongen has a distinguished career in the cultural sector, with a keen interest in architecture and urban planning. He is currently, amongst other things, working on a programme to strengthen the socio-cultural climate and the reach of art and culture in Rotterdam East. Previously, Van Dongen has worked for IABR, NAi and on a large number of theatre, festival and exhibition productions.

After a highly successful 15th edition in 2023, AFFR wants to use the coming period to strengthen its foundations. Van Dongen will take over from Marieke Berkers; in the past year, she has taken considerable steps towards increasing the festival’s financial stability and deepening its content, an important basis for the continuity and growth of AFFR. Head of Programming Cristina Ampatzidou will act as curator for the 16th edition of the festival.
