AFFR x Rotterdam Rooftop Days: Lost in Translation
Location: P-garage Mobypark Delftsestraat, Rotterdam
Lost in Translation, Sofia Coppola’s classic about two lonely people who find each other in the immense and seemingly chaotic city of Tokyo, will screened for one night only amidst the skyscrapers of Rotterdam, on Saturday 6 June – as part of the Rotterdam Rooftop Days.
About the film
Lost in Translation, Sofia Coppola
2003 | US/Japan | 102’
Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) sits in the window of a luxury hotel. She stares lost over the illuminated urban landscape of Tokyo. The actor Bob (Bill Murray) is briefly in town to film a commercial. He finds little connection with the people he meets. These two lonely Americans find each other for a brief, unforgettable moment in an immense, chaotic city. Lost in Translation is a beautiful and tragicomic film classic that will resonate with anyone who has ever felt displaced amidst skyscrapers and neon lights. A connection, however fleeting, makes all the difference.
Supporting film: Another day of depression in Kowloon, Yuk-Yiu Ip
2012 | Hong Kong | 15’
A short film made exclusively with images from the Call of Duty: Black Ops videogame, but now entirely without shooters. This creates a mysterious atmosphere in a Hong Kong where it always seems to be raining.

About the location
You might know this parking garage from the Red BMW by artist collective Kunst & Vaarwerk, which juts out majestically from the roof. Built between tall, mirrored buildings and reconstruction architecture, this is one of the rawest spots in Rotterdam. The perfect location for a film program that engages in a dialogue with its surroundings. [image: Aad Hoogendoorn]
