AFFR History

The Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam (AFFR) was established in 2000, and the foundation organized its festival the same year as the first architecture film festival in the world. Festivals also took place again in 2001 and 2003. In 2007 AFFR made a fresh start after a few years of silence. In 2009 the event expanded significantly in terms of visitor numbers and programming.

AFFR Opening Night:
Venice Elsewhere

The thirteenth edition of the Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam opens in the brand-new Theater Zuidplein with the festive world premiere of Venice Elsewhere by filmmaker and anthropologist Elia Romanelli. A poetic documentary about the dream of Venice as the ultimate escape in a torn and globalized world.

Wed 6 Oct. 20:15
AFFR Opening Night:
Venice Elsewhere

Romanelli searches for remote places in Europe that are named after Venice: a beauty salon in Zagreb, a shopping centre in Istanbul, a Romanian village with more sheep than inhabitants, a neighbourhood on the eastern fringe of Berlin. In the style of Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities, Romanelli examines the cultural impact of a city. With stunning images and touching stories about the longing for Venice, the city slowing sinking under the weight of tourists and water.

Support act by Matteo Myderwyk 19:30
Last year at AFFR 2020 we organized a special screening of Doctor Caligary with a live score played by pianist Matteo Myderwyk. Two weeks ago Matteo debuted in the Koninklijk Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. We are proud to have him as a support act at the opening of AFFR 2021 at Theater Zuidplein. Doors will be open at 19:30.
