During Rotterdam Architecture Month ’23, AFFR presents a special one-off screening of the still relevant classic Do the Right Thing by Spike Lee. The screening takes place at the floating festival heart in the Maashaven – the perfect opportunity to see this film on the big screen in a unique setting.
With this film AFFR engages provocatively with the theme of this year’s RA Month: Liquid City. For if you look at a heat map of Rotterdam you immediately see that all the water turns green, but the city turns dark red. Living with heat stress is unhealthy, and Do the Right Thing clearly illustrates what the effects of an overheated city can be. For that alone, every inhabitant of Rotterdam – and every city dweller in general – should see this film at least once.

It’s the hottest day of the year, and in New York’s working class district of Bedford-Stuyvesant in Brooklyn relationships between residents reach boiling point, partly because of the summer heat, partly because people are intolerant of one another. Do the Right Thing was a resounding commercial and artistic success and it established the reputation of Spike Lee as a director. The film was released in 1989, but many of its themes – police violence, racism, gentrification, heat stress – remain topical almost 35 years later.
