AFFR History

The Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam (AFFR) was established in 2000, and the foundation organized its festival the same year as the first architecture film festival in the world. Festivals also took place again in 2001 and 2003. In 2007 AFFR made a fresh start after a few years of silence. In 2009 the event expanded significantly in terms of visitor numbers and programming.

Save the date for AFFR 2022

The fourteenth edition of the Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam takes place from 5 to 9 October 2022. The first films have already been submitted, and new plans are in the pipeline. After our successful and well-attended event last year, we are working to broaden the reach and deepen the content of the festival. With sell-out venues, lively debates and guests from all over the world. To increase the impact of the festival, we are entering into new partnerships, we are expanding programme, and we are strengthening our team with an additional Film Editor and a PR & Press Officer.

We look back one more time at AFFR 2021, which was a huge success despite the turbulent circumstances. It included a fantastic opening at a packed Theater Zuidplein, a cheerful Drive-In Cinema at RDM Rotterdam, the presentation of striking results from the Film & Architecture Studio, enthusiastic introductions, passionate filmmakers and lively debates about current issues. With established names like Hubert Sauper, Shekhar Deshpande and Paula van der Oest alongside talented young makers of stunning films about the city and architecture all over the world.

AFFR is and remains the annual benchmark reflecting critically on urban society through the medium of film. An international film festival that holds up a mirror to the city. Looking forward to full houses in October 2022!
