Register now for Designing Community! #2

Learn about desiging a just and inclusive city. As part of the Rotterdam Architecture Month AIR and AFFR will examine new ways in which community involvement informs urban design, architecture and planning.

Register now for Designing Community! #2

Community is one of the most used terms in architectural discourse. How might designers apply their skills to add to a sense of belonging and inclusion within communities? How do they co-create complex spatial development? And how does design help shape meaningful places that facilitate the encounter of unknown others and reflect both individual identities as well as shared stories? The two-day ‘designing community’ program consists of public lectures by experienced designers and discussions between inspired city makers. It explores high-quality architecture and investigates the potential of innovative design concepts.

Design for the Just City
On this second day of Designing Community among others Toni Griffin will share her research into the design of the just city at Harvard Graduate School of Design. She will head a week long masterclass, initiated by Veldacademie, AIR, EMI op Zuid and Rotterdam municipality. We-Society program. Partnering with AFFR we will screen examples of architecture and urban design that expresses community, shared stories and individual identity. Furthermore we will search for new public buildings and domain and explore ways for urban area development to katalyse community and spatial justice.

14.00 hrs – Toni L. Griffin (Harvard Graduate School of Design) – on Design for the Just City
15.00 hrs – Arna Mačkić, Lorien Beijaert (Studio LA), Hicham Khalidi (curator Sculpture International Rotterdam Triënnale), Cristina Ampatzidou (Amateur Cities / AFFR) – on expressing community identity through design
