The tenth edition of the Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam takes place at LantarenVenster cinema from 10 to 14 October 2018. The AFFR editors — headed by curator Jord den Hollander — are working to select 75 high-profile international films about recent developments in the city and architecture. In addition to screening feature films and documentaries, the festival includes talk shows, debates and lectures related to topical issues.
The theme of AFFR 2018 is ‘Building Happiness’. We live in a period of economic boom. Construction, development and speculation are in full swing again, and resounding growth rates are the norm. Yet there is growing recognition that we cannot separate our concept of progress from its destructive side effects: climate change, social inequality, cultural conflicts and terrorism. Is the prospect of engineered happiness and a liveable city reserved for a small proportion of the world’s population, or are there opportunities for all? In its tenth edition, the theme of which is ‘Building Happiness’, the Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam explores how we can view the side effects of the pursuit of happiness as a challenge to create a better and more sustainable world.
