AFFR History

The Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam (AFFR) was established in 2000, and the foundation organized its festival the same year as the first architecture film festival in the world. Festivals also took place again in 2001 and 2003. In 2007 AFFR made a fresh start after a few years of silence. In 2009 the event expanded significantly in terms of visitor numbers and programming.

Watch film during the Rotterdam Architecture Month

AFFR organizes two atmospheric film nights during the Rotterdam Architecture Month. These evenings are all about current themes in architecture and the city. On May 25, AFFR shows the film Human Shelter by Boris Bertram. It is one of the best-rated films of AFFR 2018. The 15 June film will be announced shortly.

Rotterdam will be celebrating architecture, also in 2019. The Rotterdam Architecture Month takes place from 24 May to 16 June, with festivals, exhibitions, lectures, films and tours at special places in Rotterdam. Naturally as the largest platform for Film and Architecture AFFR will join this event too.

The former Post Office on Coolsingel is the central point during the Rotterdam Architecture Month. The doors will open one more time before the major renovation begins. You can visit this iconic building during the Rotterdam Architecture Month during the week during the evening hours. Admission is free on weekends.

Human Shelter – 25 May 22:00 hrs
Director Boris Bertram took a fascinating journey around the world in search of answers to the question of when a shelter becomes a home. City of Gold – 15 June 22:00 hrs
From Little Ethiopia and Koreatown to Little Armenia and Pico-Robertson, Los Angeles is a fascinating multicultural treasure trove. The documentary City of Gold creates a surprising portrait of this metropolis seen through the eyes of friendly food critic en LA lover Jonathan Gold. This Pulitzer Prize winner visits the most inconspicuous food spots and discovers the city as a complex incubator for more than a hundred different culinary cultures.

Rotterdam Architecture Month

Rotterdam has a rich tradition in the field of architecture. This makes Rotterdam the city par excellence where architecture is alive and ready to be experienced. In 2019 this will be celebrated from 24 May to 16 June with a Rotterdam Architecture Month #RAM19 that is bustling with special programming. This year, architecture even has its own main stage in the heart of the city. For those who want to go up, look for some depth or take a peek behind the scenes, visit #RAM19.
