AFFR History

The Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam (AFFR) was established in 2000, and the foundation organized its festival the same year as the first architecture film festival in the world. Festivals also took place again in 2001 and 2003. In 2007 AFFR made a fresh start after a few years of silence. In 2009 the event expanded significantly in terms of visitor numbers and programming.

Film & Architecture Studio: online crash course storytelling

From 7 to 28 September AFFR and Independent School for the City will organize the third Film & Architecture Studio supervised by architect and filmmaker Jord den Hollander. A unique series of online lectures and sessions on the film narrative related to city and and architecture. We are welcoming internationally awarded director of photography Thomas Kist who worked with directors as Theo van Gogh, Steve Buscemi and Stanley Tucci and who has been involved in many documentaries on architecture. Italian filmmaker and anthropologist Elia Romanelli whose latest film will be the opening film of AFFR 2021, will be a tutor in the studio as well.

Film & Architecture Studio: online crash course storytelling

The online Film and Architecture Studio offers a comprehensive way to use cinematic language in architecture and urban design. It is a hands-on studio that focuses on learning and understanding the narrative of filmmaking as a way to explore the built environment. Participants in this course are introduced to the essential elements of filmmaking and learn how to relate these to architecture and the city. The focus of the studio is not so much on the technical aspects of filmmaking and postproduction, but rather on film as a way to structure your thoughts and to turn your findings into a gripping story.

Course structure
The online Film and Architecture Studio is spread over a period of a month, allowing participants to conduct research in their immediate surroundings. Though weekly online meetings between 7 and 28 September we will exchange ideas and discuss the participants progress with both the tutors involved as well as other participants in the course. We will start the first session with a general lecture and practical instructions by tutor and curator Jord den Hollander. During the weeks that follow, we’ll gather again to discuss our progress, followed by a conversation about the various approaches and ways to move forward. These meetings are combined with a presentation and conversation with DOP Thomas Kist and anthropologist and filmmaker Elia Romanelli on 16 and 23 September. If corona allows, we will optionally get together in Rotterdam on 7 October for the festive screening of the short movies after attending the opening of the Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam on Wednesday 6 October.

AFFR and Independent School for the City
The Film & Architecture Studio is organized by the Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam and the Independent School for the City. The studio is open to students and (young) professionals in the fields of architecture, design, cinematography and other urban studies. Although it might be useful, the film and architecture studio does not require any advanced knowledge in filmmaking or special equipment like cameras or editing tools. All recording tools are welcome, but a smartphone and laptop would work as bare essentials.

The thirteenth Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam focuses on the theme More Than Houses and takes place from 6 – 10 October 2021.
