AFFR History

The Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam (AFFR) was established in 2000, and the foundation organized its festival the same year as the first architecture film festival in the world. Festivals also took place again in 2001 and 2003. In 2007 AFFR made a fresh start after a few years of silence. In 2009 the event expanded significantly in terms of visitor numbers and programming.

Opening Night:
7 Oct. 20:00 RDM Rotterdam

The Opening Night on Wednesday October 7 is SOLD OUT. The two reruns of Spaceship Earth on Friday 9 and Saturday 10 October in LantarenVenster are also sold out.

AFFR 2020 opens on Wednesday 7 October with the Dutch premiere of Spaceship Earth (Matt Wolf, 2020). Buy your tickets now for a festive drive-in cinema at RDM Rotterdam!
The event takes place at the parking of the RDM site on Scheepsbouwweg, right in the heart of Rotterdam port. With a view across to the former quarantine island in the port, RDM Rotterdam is the perfect place to enjoy the spectacular new documentary Spaceship Earth, which tells the story of eight idealistic scientists who in 1991 embarked on a two-year period of self-imposed isolation in their own built miniature version of the earth's ecosystem: Biosphere 2.

Located deep in the Arizona Desert is a vast complex of glass domes housing a miniature version of the earth’s ecosystem. Called Biosphere 2, the complex was built by a close-knit group of artists, ecologists and adventurers as an experimental project in anticipation of the colonization of Mars. Biosphere 2 hit the headlines in 1991 when eight ‘biospherians’ sealed themselves off hermetically from the outside world for two years.

Spaceship Earth, from the American director Matt Wolf, tells the fascinating story of this unique architectural, social and ecological experiment, which is of particular relevance today. Inspired by the work of Buckminster Fuller and the science-fiction film Silent Running, the eight scientists started out on an insane adventure, subjecting themselves to voluntarily quarantine, by the standards of which today’s COVID-19 isolation pales into insignificance. Never before has the story of this scientific experiment, with its dramatic denouement and featuring original footage of the ‘biospherians’, been told so revealingly.

Tickets cost € 29.50 per car and are valid for two people. The film’s audio will be transmitted on an FM frequency. The RDM site at Scheepsbouwweg 12 opens its gates at 18:30 on the opening night for the best seats! The screening starts at 20:00.
