AFFR History

The Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam (AFFR) was established in 2000, and the foundation organized its festival the same year as the first architecture film festival in the world. Festivals also took place again in 2001 and 2003. In 2007 AFFR made a fresh start after a few years of silence. In 2009 the event expanded significantly in terms of visitor numbers and programming.

Huge social and economic inequality exists in the Brazilian metropolis of São Paulo. The residential towers of this vast city are all managed by one figure: the porteiro. This concierge-and-security-guard-in-one watches over the transition between city and home of his bosses: the wealthy tower dwellers. These residents demand much lot from their porteiro: friendship, a helping hand when something breaks down in the home, and a sense of security. But what does the porteiro get in return? The testimony of porteiros is compared to that of a European artist who visits Brazil during the colonial period and writes about relations between the Portuguese rulers and those reduced to the status of slaves. The film thus reveals how the colonial mentality persists in the 21st century. A justified call for a revolution and the forming of a new society based on equality. A film full of humour and irony – but especially a scathing indictment.
