The overpopulated PGV in Venezuela is a prison like none you’ve seen before: run almost entirely by the detainees themselves. It even has its own justice and tax systems. A curious yet dangerous community, maintained by a corrupt penitentiary system. Andres Figueredo’s The Cause is a fascinating portrait of a prison compiled from five years of unique film material, mostly shot using hidden cameras. It turns out that there’s little difference between the worlds inside and outside the jail. In truth, everybody was already born and grew up in a prison, the inmates explain. Every detainee continues to search for salvation.
