This hundred-year-old silent film has recently been digitally restored and, specially for AFFR, it will be accompanied by live music from jazz pianist Matteo Myderwyk. At a village fete the mysterious hypnotist Doctor Caligari appears with a clairvoyant sleepwalker. Have they anything to do with the series of deaths ravaging the village? The film was banned for many years owing to its uniquely expressionist imagery. As the first horror film in an explicitly designed decor, Caligari went on to exert a huge influence on both architecture and film history. The screening will be preceded by a short lecture by film expert Erik Daams on the influence of this unforgettable classic.
