AFFR History

The Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam (AFFR) was established in 2000, and the foundation organized its festival the same year as the first architecture film festival in the world. Festivals also took place again in 2001 and 2003. In 2007 AFFR made a fresh start after a few years of silence. In 2009 the event expanded significantly in terms of visitor numbers and programming.

Biosphere 2 was a unique architectural and ecological experiment of particular relevance to today. Spaceship Earth tells the fascinating story of the futurist complex in which eight idealistic scientists hermetically sealed themselves off from the outside world for two years in the 1990s. Inspired by the work of Buckminster Fuller and the science fiction film Silent Running, they embarked on a crazy experiment in voluntary quarantine, by the standards of which today’s Covid-19 isolation pales into insignificance. Never before has the story with the dramatic conclusion, including original footage of the ‘biospherians’, been told so revealingly.

Update 5 October: Due to the strict, recently implemented Covid-measures in Rotterdam Rijnmond we unfortunately need to cancel the AFFR Drive-In Opening Night on 7 Oct. as well as the King Kong Drive-in Cinema on 8 Oct at RDM Rotterdam. We will inform our visitors whose ticket is cancelled in a personal mail 6 October at latest. Extra screenings of Spaceship Earth will take place in LantarenVenster on Thursday 8 October  at 16:00 and 16:30, and on Sunday 11 October at 10:00. Tickets are on sale.
