Pyramiden

Pyramiden is an abandoned coal mining settlement on the island of Spitsbergen. The remarkable thing is that it dates from the Soviet era. The state company Arktikoegol bought the mining rights from a Swedish company in 1927. In its heyday it was home to a thousand men, women and children, but the mine closed in 1998 and the typical communist structures were abandoned. With a decor like that, you don’t need much of a story. In the post-apocalyptic sci-fi film Pyramiden, a hunter tormented by dreams of polar bears spends days wandering around the settlement. He watches old films about Pyramiden in the abandoned cinema and gradually loses his grip on reality. Things aren’t really helped when he comes across a futurist seedbank after his departure.
