Introduction by Eelco Bosch van Rosenthal
Amid the Everglades lies Pahokee, a small agrarian town in the ‘forgotten America’. Although the inhabitants struggle with poverty and racism, the community remains close-knit. Annual rituals such as football games and beauty contests constitute the cultural landscape and enhance the stories of the America that everybody knows. But is reality really that simple? With their social-realist portrait of four charismatic pupils at a high school with a predominantly Latino and Afro-American population, Ivete Lucas and Patrick Bresnan offer a nuanced impression of America. Hopeful and proud, despite everything. Pahokee shows that even though the future is increasingly uncertain, American dreams are still alive.
