In Once the Dust Settles, filmmaker John Appel focuses on three cities hit by different disasters: an earthquake in Amatrice, Italy, exploded nuclear power plant in Chernobyl and war in Aleppo. What happens after these cities have disappeared from the news and tourists have started to appear? Can a disaster turn into a tourist attraction? Here too life finds its way. The cities each deal with the recent past in their own way. A respectful triptych about the relief of reconstruction, the appeal of disaster and the processing of a difficult history.
