AFFR History

The Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam (AFFR) was established in 2000, and the foundation organized its festival the same year as the first architecture film festival in the world. Festivals also took place again in 2001 and 2003. In 2007 AFFR made a fresh start after a few years of silence. In 2009 the event expanded significantly in terms of visitor numbers and programming.

It might seem like a joke, but this is the shocking story of what happens when people have no access to sewers and WCs. Jack Sim is Mr Toilet, a man who knows everything about toilets. Raised in the slums of Singapore, he has made it his mission to improve sanitary conditions all over the world. He successfully argued at the UN for a ‘World Toilet Day’, the first global celebration of the porcelain throne. Full of idiosyncratic humour, he dispels countless myths and taboos concerning poo and piss. His most ambitious project to date is Clean India, an initiative to install six million toilets across India. Without shunning toilet humour, Lily Zepeda’s Mr Toilet: The World’s #2 Man paints a charming portrait of a devoted individual who wants to save the world with his WCs.
