Sigurd Lewerentz stood up against the reigning spirit of Swedish modernism. He designed not with light but with darkness, stressing craft rather than prefabrication. He gave no interviews and shunned media attention. He preferred to let his projects do the talking. After a hefty argument over the elaboration of a big project with Gunnar Asplund, that other big Swedish architect, he stepped away from architecture for a long time. When he picked up his pencil again for his second flourishing, he designed his most daring and experimental architecture.
