Introduction by Lada Hršak
Last and First Men is a visual and musical masterpiece by composer and filmmaker Jóhann Jóhannsson. It was the last project he completed before his tragic death. With a stunning soundtrack and captivating black-and-white images shot on 16mm, he captures the Spomeniks, gigantic monuments from the time of Tito’s socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. The brutalist objects appear as natural forms, silent memorials to a failed utopia. From two billion years in the future – loosely based on Olaf Stapledon’s 1930s science fiction classic - Tilda Swinton tells us how a hyper-evolved humankind face extinction.
