AFFR History

The Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam (AFFR) was established in 2000, and the foundation organized its festival the same year as the first architecture film festival in the world. From Earth to Sky

From Earth to Sky explores the work of seven unique and accomplished Indigenous architects as they design and complete extraordinary buildings in cities and communities across North America and Turtle Island. The architects, including Douglas Cardinal, Canada’s first Indigenous architect, and Tammy Eagle Bull,  America’s first female Indigenous architect, are diverse in gender, age and artistic approach. What unites them is their Indigenous identity. Having lived harrowing experiences of dysfunction, poverty, violence and assimilation, they all overcame adversity to become the top in their field. Motivated by their desires to protect the planet, their work is rich and varied. The film culminates as the architects travel to the Venice Biennale of Architecture to present, for the first time, Indigenous Architecture from North America in a spectacular installation. A stunning force of nature, From Earth To Sky is a riveting journey through the point of view of Indigenous architects, who envision a bright and prosperous future for the world.
