AFFR History

The Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam (AFFR) was established in 2000, and the foundation organized its festival the same year as the first architecture film festival in the world. Festivals also took place again in 2001 and 2003. In 2007 AFFR made a fresh start after a few years of silence. In 2009 the event expanded significantly in terms of visitor numbers and programming.

Located in the middle of the desolate steppes of Kazakhstan is the world’s first space station. It was from here that the first man was launched into space on the Sputnik. A gigantic space complex in the desert, built in the 1950s and still in use. Baikonur, Earth reveals surprising secrets about the Baikonur Cosmodrome, such as the many orthodox and heathen monuments designed to ensure that risky missions run smoothly. Using extraordinarily beautiful images of idyllic models and the ruins of abandoned buildings, Andrea Sorini shows the utopian pipe dream of life on another planet. And the hard reality on earth today.
