Introduction by Wendy van Slagmaat-Bos
Market Street, once known as the Champs-Élysées of San Francisco. The showpiece of the city in the roaring twenties, lined with theatres and restaurants. Today the street and surrounding neighbourhoods have fallen into decay and are the poorest in the city. To halt the decline, San Francisco launched a pioneering search for improvement. In 5 Blocks, directors Dan Goldes and Robert Cortlandt highlight the quagmire into which well-meaning planners threaten to sink. They capture conversations between parties involved and follow discussions about income inequality, changing demography and gentrification. A courageous journey by a community struggling to transform itself from dilapidated district into vibrant neighbourhood.
