About the film
Ruins as a playground: the moving and urgent documentary Yalla Parkour uses parkour, the athletic running through and over the urban environment, as a form of playful protest. We see how a group of young people in Khan Younis film themselves as they explore and claim their surroundings. This sensitive and intimate portrait shows young people trying to make the best of a terrible situation and, despite everything, is full of small moments of joy. The film pulses with a longing for peace and a normal life. At the same time, Yalla Parkour is also partly a personal diary, made before the current destruction of Gaza. Director Areeb Zuaiter was born in Nablus but has lived in the US for some time. She was not allowed to enter Gaza but had a local team film on location. A story told by the Palestinians themselves; a painful reminder of what was but also what could be, with a heartbreaking end credit sequence.
