About the film
A poetic meditation on maintenance and care set against the characteristic backdrop of a monumental housing complex in Tbilisi, Lift Lady follows the daily life of Mzia, an aging elevator operator keeping vigil over the building’s key piece of infrastructure: a lift that takes residents to their homes – ánd to an extraordinary elevated footbridge which connects the neighbourhood. When the elevator breaks down, Mzia’s stoic efforts to repair it plunge her into a quiet battle against an indifferent bureaucracy. As she calls, writes letters and faces residents’ frustrations, the film turns into a portrait of institutional neglect and the fading ideals of post-Soviet urban realities.
