About the film
Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore is a landmark video artwork tracing British dance culture – from Northern soul in the discos of the 1970s to the rise of Acid House in the 1990s. Built from archival footage and a hypnotic soundtrack (remixed by artists including Jamie XX and The Avalanches), artist Mark Leckey shows how club culture forges connection and reflects the tensions between liberation and economic reality. The title refers to the Italian jeans brand Fiorucci, once a coveted emblem of status and style on the dancefloor. Leckey transforms the club into a kind of temple: a space for shared, ecstatic release and self-invention. Screening part of AFFR x Weelde – Architects of the After Hours.
