About the film

Industry City is a gigantic former industrial complex in Brooklyn, one of the most sought-after neighbourhoods in New York. When the complex is bought by an international developer to be turned into a new ‘innovation district’, local residents rise up in protest. Everything depends on the rezoning plan. Emergent City portrays a community of mostly Latino and Chinese New Yorkers who have been affected over the years by racism, the loss of industrial jobs and rising rents. Can their collective action make a dent in the forces of money and politics? Directors Kelly Anderson and Jay Arthur Sterrenberg keep the complex process of urban development lively and urgent.
