The year is 2019. Flying cars glide between skyscrapers as flames erupt from smokestacks and holographic adverts flicker across walls. This can only be Blade Runner, Ridley Scott’s 1982 science fiction classic, adapted from Philip K. Dick’s novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. This cyberpunk work in film noir style is considered a visual masterpiece that offers a dark yet enchanting glimpse of a dystopian future – one that may not be so far removed from our own. At its heart is a police officer tasked with hunting androids so lifelike they provoke questions about humanity itself. And of course, Rutger Hauer gives an unforgettable performance as the replicant Roy Batty. But it is because of the postmodern vision of Los Angeles that the film continues to influence our vision of the future. It is no surprise that Blade Runner opened the first edition of AFFR in 2000.
