About Charlotte’s Castle
A group of eccentric residents occupy the historical Spadina Gardens apartment building in Toronto. They seem to have been living there forever and share a deep connection with the building. Their reality is shattered when they hear that a Dutch developer has bought Spadina Gardens and plans to renovate it, replacing its historical features with black industrial frames and fishbone parquet floors. An alliance is formed with Charlotte at the helm, to lead a battle against time to list the building as a monument in order to protect it. An entertaining, yet grounded commentary on the ubiquitous, speculation-driven, generic redevelopments that are flattening our cities.
“An ode to a motley group of unlikely activists defending their homes, a case against renovictions, and most of all, a joy to watch!” AFFR curator Cristina Ampatzidou
Charlotte’s Castle will have its European premiere at AFFR, followed by a Q&A with filmmaker Jamie Kastner and our traditional festive after-party.
