AFFR History

The Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam (AFFR) was established in 2000, and the foundation organized its festival the same year as the first architecture film festival in the world. Festivals also took place again in 2001 and 2003. In 2007 AFFR made a fresh start after a few years of silence. In 2009 the event expanded significantly in terms of visitor numbers and programming.

AFFR - the Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam – offers another varied programme of films about architecture, the city and landscape: portraits of architects and their designs, as well as films that explore current themes such as the way we deal with water, the workplace culture in the architecture industry, and the globalized waste industry.

New this year is a particular focus on one period – the critical 1970s – and on one country undergoing important developments that are relevant to the profession. This is India, since 2022 the world’s most populated country, with all the spatial challenges that poses. Although separate programme elements, they reflect the main theme of AFFR 2023: Contested Space.

As always, the AFFR broad programme ranges from investigative, in-depth documentaries to lighter, entertaining films. This year’s selection even includes animation films and a music film about architecture. In addition, there is plenty of scope for lectures, tours and debates, with acclaimed speakers from the design field and beyond. So AFFR has something for everybody interested in architecture, in film or in the built environment.

AFFR takes place this year from 4 to 8 October at LantarenVenster and Theater Zuidplein. The full programme will be announced and ticket sales start on 12 September.
