AFFR explores the relationship between film, cities and architecture by programming and screening architecture films and by organizing introductions and debates.
The Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam (AFFR) was established in 2000, and the foundation organized its festival the same year as the first architecture film festival in the world. Festivals also took place again in 2001 and 2003. In 2007 AFFR made a fresh start after a few years of silence. In 2009 the event expanded significantly in terms of visitor numbers and programming.
The special guest at AFFR 2021 is the celebrated American film expert Shekhar Deshpande. During AFFR he will be interviewed by Dana Linssen, and draw on numerous film fragments to offer a fascinating look at the role of the window in a world that’s been shuttered for over a year.
Deshpande is Professor in Media and Communication at Arcadia University in Pennsylvania. He is a co-author, with Meta Mazaj, of the landmark book World Cinema: A Critical Introduction. He is also the author of the forthcoming book, Anthology Film and World Cinema.
