AFFR History

The Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam (AFFR) was established in 2000, and the foundation organized its festival the same year as the first architecture film festival in the world. Festivals also took place again in 2001 and 2003. In 2007 AFFR made a fresh start after a few years of silence. In 2009 the event expanded significantly in terms of visitor numbers and programming.

Archined Classic: Stalker by Andrei Tarkovsky
Sun 8 Oct, 19:00

An Archined classic is a feature film that the Archined editors feel every designer should see. For this edition of AFFR, the selected classic is Stalker, the ultimate trip through a contested space, with an introduction by Floris Alkemade, as a closing event on Sunday.

“Enchanting, philosophical, poetic: every designer should look at least once into the mirror that Tarkovsky holds up with Stalker.”

– Marina van den Bergen, editor in chief at Archined

A quest for happiness, headed by Stalker, in a high-security, mysterious place called the Zone. The confusion and fear of our time have never been better expressed than in this 1979 masterpiece by Tarkovsky. Is there any hope in the marshy, desolate landscape of the Zone? Is the journey of the Writer and the Professor to the Room where all wishes are fulfilled doomed from the outset? The Zone is the ultimate contested space where human dignity must once again be defended. Tarkovsky makes it clear that cynicism and indifference are the biggest obstacles standing in the way of a better society.
