Are you our new Specials Programmer?

AFFR is looking for a Specials Programmer with a passion for architecture and film. In this role, you will be responsible for both the content curation and the practical execution of our program specials – think debates and introductions to our films. Are you an independent programmer and an experienced debate moderator who thrives on directing impactful events?

About AFFR

AFFR is the world’s largest film festival on architecture and the city. Founded in 2000, the festival offers a vibrant platform for filmmakers, architects, urban thinkers, students and the wider public to examine urgent spatial questions through film. The festival takes place every year at various venues in Rotterdam. Each edition presents a wide selection of documentaries, fiction films, short films and immersive media projects, complemented by talks, debates, masterclasses and other special programmes.

The next edition will take place between 7–11 October 2026, at venues including Theater Rotterdam, LantarenVenster and Nieuwe Instituut.

Your role

As Specials Programmer, you are part of the festival’s programming team. You hold final responsibility for the festival’s program specials: the debate program, masterclasses, introductions, and talkshows. You will be the link between various program partners and the festival, and the go-to person for all speakers and contributors.

What will you be doing?

  • You are editorially responsible for all program specials, including introductions, debates, interviews, and talk shows during the festival and year-round program;
  • You provide active substantive input for the design and realization of program specials;
  • You contribute to film selection and assist in developing program strands that align with the overall program;
  • You identify and approach potential new partners and initiate collaborations around specific themes or programs;
  • You invite guests, lead discussions regarding content and conditions, and coordinate the guest list with our partners;
  • You ensure that speakers, hosts, and moderators are fully briefed and well-prepared.

Who are you?

  • You have a background as an architect, architectural historian or similar and are fully up to date with current developments in architectural practice, both in The Netherlands and internationally;
  • You possess a relevant and extensive network within the world of architecture and the broader built environment sector;
  • You have affinity with film;
  • You have a good knowledge of Dutch and English.

What do we offer?

  • A responsible position at the largest and most enjoyable film festival about cities and architecture in the world;
  • An enthusiastic team of engaged colleagues;
  • A freelance assignment from 18 May to 13 November, for 6 to 12 hours per week, with full availability during the festival;
  • The intention of a multi-year collaboration;
  • AFFR follows the guidelines and fair pay practice tools created within the fairPACCT framework by the Film Festivals Chain Table.
