AFFR History

The Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam (AFFR) was established in 2000, and the foundation organized its festival the same year as the first architecture film festival in the world. Festivals also took place again in 2001 and 2003. In 2007 AFFR made a fresh start after a few years of silence. In 2009 the event expanded significantly in terms of visitor numbers and programming.

Contested Space

The space we share with one another is increasingly a source of conflict. Over the past decade, our increasing and often conflicting claims on space have made disputes more intense and more urgent, widening the gap between the haves and de have-nots. That is why the AFFR programme this year highlights the theme of Contested Space.

”Excellent program, excellent talks, excellent atmosphere.”

The best films of AFFR 2023

The last farm of Amsterdam - Bart Melief, 2023

The closure of De Boterbloem, an organic care farm, provokes protests. Located in a small polder exactly between Schiphol and Amsterdam, in a landscape under pressure because of the needs of distribution centres – pressure that has been increasing for years.

All that Breathes - Shaunak Sen, 2022

Two brothers concern themselves with the fate of black kites, birds that can scarcely survive in the heavily populated Delhi. Their improvised animal shelter is an oasis of hope in a suffocating metropolis.

The Cathedral - Denis Dobrovoda, 2022

For 70 years, Justo Gallego worked on the construction of a cathedral of epic proportions – without drawings, without any knowledge of building technology, and almost without any money. When he died in 2021 at the age of 96, he left behind an astonishing building. A film about hope and determination.

Skin of Glass - Denise Zmekhol, 2023

The dramatic fate of a modernist office tower in Sao Paulo, affectionately called Skin of Glass, occupied today by hundreds of families, like a vertical favela. Filmmaker Zmekhol, daughter of the architect, made a compelling personal film about design passion, loss, social inequality and a massive building boom.

Granddad and the Pier - Reuben Armstrong, 2023

The 87-year-old grandfather of filmmaker Reuben Armstrong campaigns to save an historical pier that constitutes the memory of the Isle of Man. A moving film about a passionate man who wins over the population with his charm and persuasiveness.

“A very impressive edition! I especially liked that almost all the films had an introduction or Q&A – often from very prominent figures from the field.”
