De Rijn van Lobith tot aan Zee (The Rhine from Lobith to the Sea) from 1922 is widely seen as the first splendid example of the typical Dutch documentary school.
In 2007, architect and filmmaker Jord den Hollander and landscape architect Dirk Sijmons made the identical journey. Aboard a freighter from the twenties they visited the places that were so meticulously recorded in the 1922 film. It resulted in a film, which shows not only that the landscape and cities have changed, but also the lives of the residents.
Both films are now on a DVD together, along with an accompanying booklet with background information on the history of the original film and card images and texts on the history of the Rhine.
A fascinating diptych about the consequences of human action for the Dutch landscape.
Booklet with texts of:
Jan Kolen (professor of Heritage of City and Country at VU Amsterdam), Wies Sanders (Urban planning Unlimited) and Jord den Hollander (architect and filmmaker).
