Code 46 catapults the viewer into the future, where cities are demarcated zones. Outside these zones lies no man’s land. People have to take out insurance if they want to travel between these cities and insurance is not granted to everyone. In Code 46 we follow William (Tim Robbins), an insurance expert who has to investigate a case involving false travel papers. He travels to another city and questions a number of suspects and thus meets Maria (Samantha Morton). Winterbottom has done a splendid, convincing, job of
suggesting a future with the help of existing architecture, techniques and cities. To achieve this the crew filmed Japan’s mini-apartments, Dubai's desert, Hong Kong’s sterile non-places, India’s poverty and chaotic and booming Pudong in Shanghai.
